five short movements - 1993

a film by Justin Stephenson

The premiere collaboration between filmmaker Justin Stephenson and Gabreïl Spiegelschrift, this award winning short dancefilm ‘five short movements’ would establish an artistic partnership that continued with ‘nearly home’ (1994) and ‘Tabulæ Anatomicæ Sex’ (1995). The pair strived to find a balance in the genre that went beyond simple documentation and adaptation. Using improvisation techniques Gabreïl reinterpreted phrases from ’Young Man Intrigued by the Flight of a Non-Euclidean Fly’ (1992) and ‘Icarus:landed’ (1993) which Justin re-envision and reconstructed though multimedia and editing.
