Gabreïl Spiegelschrift

Unlike most boys who choose the dance path, Gabreïl never wanted to be a fairy prince nor princess - King of the Thieves was a loftier goal!

Raised on the family pig farm outside his birthplace of Fergus, Ontario, this country-boy-cum-street-punk dropped out of Art School at 16 to begin a continuing journey in contemporary dance. Combining high art conventions with folk metaphor and eastern dance ideals with western idioms into his signature raw brute force, Gabreïl has created what Dance International called “gutsy and distinct” live performances and award winning dance film projects that have been presented and broadcasted through out Canada, the United States and Europe.

"I am often asked why I started dancing and frankly the answer is that my mother put me in dance classes when I was 8. She says that it was to ensure there was no resentments of my younger sister also in the class, but after reflection I believe whole heartedly that as a mother she had an unconscious awareness that dancing was the greatest form of protest to both the socio-economic and so called religious moral compass that was present in my youth. Despite all efforts they could not and still cannot suppress my joy of dancing."

Some notable musical collaborations and performances include Canadian Industrial rockers Malhavoc, and the ethnopunk world music ensemble Rhea’s Obsession, American cellist Elinor Frey, as well as Ashley MacIsaac & the Paper Boys for the CBC duMaurier Concert Stage in Vancouver.

His adventures have also included teaching comprehensive social dance classes since 1996 and hiding out in Ireland, ceart go leor!
