Ricercare Montagne - 2009

for solo male dancer and cellist

to search out mountains
for solo male dancer and cellist

Excited by the initial collaboration in ‘he misses her’ (2007) cellist Elinor Frey and choreographer Gabreïl Spiegelschrift reunite for ‘Ricercare Montagne’ (2009) spurred on by their personal travels and shared passions for Northern Italy.

For this new work Elinor lays the foundations with the musical combination of Seventeenth Century cello Ricercars of Bolognese Baroque composers Domenico Gabrielli and Giovanni Battista degli Antonii with the late Italian experimental composer Luciano Berio’s ‘Sequenza XIV’(2002) for violoncello.

The third part to the solos ‘Young Man intrigued by the Non-Euclidean Fly’ (1992) and ‘Icarus:landed’ (1993), ‘Ricercare Montagne’ draws from Gabreïl’s research on the unrealized piece ‘Seasfaidh mo chuidse crainn - my trees will stand’ (2003), an abstract narrative paralleling the difficulties and conflicts of defining ones convictions amidst the religious and ideological upheaval of the late 1600s, indistinguishable to intellectual climate of today.
