Luft und Erde - 1994

Duet #12

Air and Earth
Duet #12

Braving the weather, from under umbrellas, the audience watched as Nichole LaRochelle and Gabreïl Spiegelschrift danced ‘Luft und Erde’ (1994) in the middle of Belair Street, Toronto during the second annual Circle Ball Fair Festival 1994. A fitting spectacle for a piece inspired by the elements air and earth, the duet was on one hand a critical analyisis of late 20th century domestic partnerships and a modern retelling of the Orpheus Story on the other.

The duet would take many forms as it progressed. In the early stages of the process, where it was featured throughout the dancefilm ‘Tabulæ Anatomicæ Sex' (1995), the street theatre versions performed with percussion ensembles and Medieval Music groups, and finally more traditional theatric version in 1995 to music by Rhea's Obsession (after Pergolesi's Stabata Mater.)

In 1996 production of a film adaptation was started. Meeting obstacles at every step in the process, from scheduling conflicts to snow storms during filmshoots, the destruction of the film and video footage due to a flood, put the project into limbo.
